How this got here

It was a browser extension
yesterday.

Splitser started as Split Screen, a private Brave extension that tiled websites side by side, and it works. But every hard part of it was a workaround for not being the browser -- so on Thursday, 13 August 2026 the tiling UI stopped being an extension and became one.

An extension can only put someone else's website in an iframe. To make that work at all it has to intercept traffic and strip the headers sites use to say no. Pages that check top !== self escape the frame anyway. And a framed login rides on third-party cookies -- blocked or partitioned by default in Safari, Firefox and Brave -- so whether it works at all is the browser's call, not the extension's.

None of that is a bug in the extension; it's the ceiling of what an extension is. Going under that ceiling meant owning the browser: real Chromium views instead of frames, first-party cookies instead of borrowed ones, and a password vault that ships with the browser rather than asking you to trust a third party with access to every site you tile.
